Born on 15^th May, 1957. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from IIT, Roorkee in the year 1977 and L.L.B. from DAV College, Dehradun. He started his career in Indian Engineering Service. Later joined Indian Revenue Service in the year 1980 and after serving in various capacities in different States, he joined as Member (Investigation), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in December 2015. He was elevated to the post of Chairman, CBDT on 1^th November, 2016 and continued till 15^th February, 2019. He was appointed as the Election Commissioner of India in February, 2019 and later elevated as the 24^th Chief Election Commissioner of India on 13^th April, 2021. He superannuated from the post of CEC on 15^th May, 2022. He was the President of Association of World Electoral Bodies (AWEB) during 2021-2022. He also served as a Member of Delimitation Commission for Jammu and Kashmir from 18^th February, 2020 to 6^th May, 2022. He has been appointed as Hon'ble Member, Lokpal of India on 12^th March, 2024.
